25 years after Amelie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet returns with this ravishing, twisty mystery with another inquisitive, dark haired, brown eyed heroine at its centre.
Violette Toussaint manages a cemetery in Burgundy, where she spends her days tending graves and listening to the stories of the people who come to visit them. When police officer Julien arrives to bury his mother’s ashes, he becomes intrigued by Violette and the mysterious story of her past. His questions begin to uncover secrets that Violette has spent years trying to leave behind.
Twenty-five years after Amélie, Jean-Pierre Jeunet returns with another film named after its dark-haired, brown-eyed heroine — and, yes, there are quirky images, clumpy shoes, strawberries and plenty of whimsy. But once the opening exuberance settles, Violette becomes something much more absorbing: a bittersweet mystery unfolding across multiple timelines, with echoes of Almodóvar as it moves between love, loss, family secrets and buried memories. Adapted from Valérie Perrin’s bestselling novel Changing the Water of Flowers, it is beautifully performed by Leïla Bekhti and, unsurprisingly, looks absolutely ravishing.
