LA GRAZIA

A president must choose between mercy and law — and his own soul.

President Mariano De Santis is nearing the end of his term. A devout Catholic and seasoned jurist, he faces two moral dilemmas: whether to pardon two convicted murderers, and whether to sign a bill legalizing euthanasia.

Following their acclaimed portrayals of Giulio Andreotti in Il Divo and Silvio Berlusconi in Loro, director Paolo Sorrentino and regular collaborator Tony Servillo return to the familiar ground of Italian politics with an absorbing meditation on doubt, duty, and the quiet heartbreak of leadership. Servillo is sublime as the fictitious leader, burdened by loneliness, self-doubt, and the weight of his office.

“Sorrentino’s filmmaking is confident and piercing… ‘La Grazia’ has, all puns intended, more grace than that. — TheWrap

“A welcome change to see Sorrentino toning things down while remaining recognisably himself” — Screen Daily

“Toni Servillo really is some kind of marvel” — The Hollywood Reporter
