Helen Mirren plays Patricia Highsmith in a deliciously dark thriller about the writer behind Tom Ripley — and the young publisher who discovers that getting her to write one last book may be murder.
Patricia Highsmith has retired to a quiet life in Switzerland, surrounded by books, animals and her own famously difficult personality. When a young publisher arrives hoping to persuade her to write one more Ripley novel, he soon discovers that getting inside the mind of the woman who created one of literature’s greatest villains may be more dangerous than he expected.
Helen Mirren clearly relishes playing the sharp-tongued, eccentric Highsmith, bringing plenty of wit and mischief to the role. Alden Ehrenreich plays the ambitious young publisher, with Olivia Cooke and Juliete Stevenson rounding off a talented cast. Directed by Anton Corbijn (Control, A Most Wanted Man) A Talent for Murder is part literary biopic, part mystery and part psychological thriller, offering a suitably twisted portrait of the woman who gave cinema one of its greatest antiheroes.
“Has chic pleasures aplenty, beginning with Mirren’s hawkish, caustically funny performance” – Variety
“That’s the real joy of the mystery: actual mystery, and an enduring obsession with how this all fits together” – Indiewire
“A cast firing on all cylinders and a script that’s full of surface-level diva dramatics without skimping on the emotional drama underneath” – Next Best Picture
