Eastern Promise Cherien Dabis Germany, Cyprus, Palestinian Territory, United States, Jordan, Greece, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt 146 min
Cherien Dabis’s sweeping, decades spanning family drama follows three generations of a Palestinian family, from the upheaval of 1948 to a life shaped by loss, love and the hope of a better future.
In the 1980s West Bank, Palestinian teenager Noor is caught up in a protest that changes his family’s life forever. In the aftermath, his mother Hanan looks back at the events that brought them to this moment, beginning with her father’s displacement from Jaffa in 1948. Her story unfolds across three generations, taking us through love, family, exile and the struggle to hold on to home and identity.
While not sidestepping the injustice, cruelty and hatred of occupation, what makes this epic film so engrossing is the attention to detail in creating the everyday rituals and loving bond of a family over time. The performances are wonderful, including a real father and son and director Cherien Dabis (Amreeka) casting herself as narrator in a story that draws on personal experience. Building towards a cathartic and profoundly humanistic ending that is sure to catch you off guard, this is a deeply moving film about what families lose, what they carry with them, and what remains when almost everything else has been taken away.
