Palestinian children in Gaza take to the skies in this uplifting documentary about kites, friendship and an extraordinary attempt to break a world record.
Musa is a talented young kite-maker living in the village of Seifa in Gaza. Abeer is a 16-year-old aspiring journalist from the Jabaliya refugee camp. Along with thousands of other children, they are preparing for an ambitious attempt to set a world record for the most kites flown at once. As they make, decorate and fly their creations, the film captures the humour, energy and imagination of young people determined to enjoy being kids despite the difficult circumstances around them.
Flying Paper is a joyful, intimate and wonderfully colourful documentary. There are rivalries, homemade inventions, aerial cameras and plenty of spectacular kites, building towards an unforgettable gathering on the beach. Rather than focusing only on the headlines, the film gives us the chance to meet the young people living there — and to see Gaza through their eyes.
