Cult Christopher Nolan United Kingdom 70 min
Actor Jeremy Theobald presents Christopher Nolan's debut film and shares his experience of working with this great director at points throughout his career.
Nolan Begins… with this brilliantly twisty neo-noir about young writer who has developed an unusual way of finding inspiration: he follows strangers through the streets of London. When one of his targets turns out to be a confident, enigmatic burglar, he is invited into a world of break-ins, secrets and stolen identities. What begins as a way of observing other people soon becomes something far more dangerous.
Made on a shoestring budget with friends and shot in stark black and white, Following is a remarkable first feature. You can already see the filmmaker Nolan would become: the fractured timeline, unreliable characters and love of a good twist are all here, but in a stripped-back, gritty London setting. A fascinating insight into the inception of one of the most critically and commercially successful directors of all time.
Special Guest:
Jeremy Theobald met Chrisopher Nolan at UCL, where they were directors of the Drama and Film Society respectively. He starred in Nolan’s first short film, co-produced and starred in Following and went on to work with the director again on Batman Begins and Tenet.
