AI Spike Jonze United States 120 min

Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with his AI assistant in Spike Jonze’s tender, funny and surprisingly prescient sci-fi romance about what it means to be human.

Theodore is a lonely writer living in a near-future Los Angeles, where technology has become woven into almost every part of daily life. Still recovering from the end of his marriage, he installs a new operating system designed to organise his life and keep him company. Her name is Samantha, and before long their conversations become more intimate, playful and complicated than either of them expected.

Written and directed by Spike Jonze, Her is a beautifully imagined love story that feels increasingly relevant in an age when we can talk to machines as though they were people. Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson — heard but never seen — bring enormous warmth to the central relationship, while Jonze creates a future that feels less like science fiction than a slightly heightened version of our own world. Funny, romantic and bittersweet, it asks a deceptively simple question: if it feels like love, does it matter that one of you is artificial?

"Her is a brilliantly reimagined rom-com, only obliquely interested in its sci-fi setting, which is casually disclosed as the film goes on, never foregrounded" - Evening Standard

"Whimsical futuro-romance effortlessly evolves into ambiguous, unfathomable hard sci-fi in Spike Jonze's best film to date" - Little White Lies

"A tender, wry, deceptively modest package -- and the closer you look, the more it reveals itself to be the proverbial Movie For Our Time" - Film Comment
