Sandra Hüller stars as a mysterious soldier hiding a life-changing secret in this atmospheric 17th-century folk tale.
In 17th century Germany, a female soldier disguises herself as a man and arrives at a remote village claiming to be the heir to a long-abandoned farm. As the suspicious villagers begin to question her story, Rose must decide how much of the truth she is prepared to reveal. But her arrival also awakens curiosity, fascination and desire in unexpected places.
Hüller is perfectly cast as the enigmatic Rose, bringing her trademark mix of intelligence, strength and vulnerability to the role. Steeped in atmosphere, the film’s eerie monochrome photography conjures a stark world of forests, farms and rigid religious rules, making Rose feel both like a gripping historical drama and a strikingly modern story about identity and self‑expression.
“A manifesto for self-invention and for gender equality, with Rose as a sort of domestic Joan of Arc fighting the established order” – Screen International
“Another outstanding star performance from Hüller” – Guardian
“The title role in the austerely beautiful character study Rose is such a thrilling fit for Sandra Hüller that it becomes impossible to imagine any other actor nailing the part” – The Hollywood Reporter
