The Fox
The Fox

Spotlight Dario Russo Australia 90 min

Olivia Colman voices a mischievous stuffed fox and the late Sam Neill is a foul mothed magpie in this surreal cult in the making Australian comedy about love, revenge and getting exactly what you wish for.

Nick is a good bloke, a wealthy heir and newly engaged to the woman he thinks is perfect. Then he discovers that Kori is cheating on him. Out hunting, Nick encounters a mysterious talking fox who offers him a solution: push Kori into a magical hole and she’ll come back as the perfect partner. What could possibly go wrong?

We’re firmly in the Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite, Poor Things) universe here, with Emily Browning relishing in the sort of role Emma Stone excels at in his films and a plot that successful asks us to buy into a world governed by archaic rules. It’s not difficult to imagine that while all this is going on in Australia, The Lobster is playing out over in Ireland. Olivia Colman’s chirpy tones lend extra hilarity to what looks like a crudely animated taxidermist fox, while Sam Neill, in one of his final roles, lends his voice to the cynical and devious magpie. Throw in magical holes and some gloriously eccentric supporting characters and you have a film that is definitely not your average romantic comedy. It is what it is!

“It’s inventive in its savagery, almost always perturbing, but succeeds at the kind of absurd genre blend that made Yorgos Lanthimos a household name” – RogerEbert.com

“A ridiculous dark comedy loaded with insane puppetry, nudity and off-the-wall humor that was inspired by Japanese and Korean folklore mixed with Russian tales, this is a blend that is purely original in its execution” – Pop Culture Leftovers

“An absurdly funny, unforgettable fairytale farce” - Inverse
