With their tiny theatre under threat of closure, two best friends must decide what they’re willing to risk—for art, for love... for each other.
Best mates, business partners and co-conspirators Lucy and Tom run a scrappy, underfunded Auckland theatre. When a freak accident jeopardizes the venue—and Tom considers leaving— Lucy must decide how far she’ll go to save the space and a friendship that might be something more.
Insightfully scripted by lead actress Sophie Henderson and directed by her husband Curtis Vowell, with whom she has collaborated on several films including Baby Done and Fantail, Workmates draws on her experience at a struggling independent theatre. Wry humour and snappy dialogue vibrantly capture the milieu of an underfunded arts organisation, the chaos of collaboration and the blurry lines between work and intimacy.
“A charming, low-key triumph. Henderson and Whelan have irresistible chemistry” — NZ On Screen
“A scrappy little love story about theatre, friendship, and the blurry bits in between” — The Spinoff
“Henderson’s script is funny, tender, and quietly devastating" — NZ Herald
